Does Using Start/Stop Wear Out the Battery More?

The Start/Stop feature does not damage the battery if the correct type is used, while the fuel savings are often greater than the cost of replacing the battery.

Start/Stop (or Idling Stop) is becoming increasingly common on cars and motorcycles to reduce fuel consumption and limit emissions in urban traffic conditions. This technology automatically shuts off the engine during temporary stops and restarts it when the driver moves off again. However, many users worry that repeatedly switching the engine off and on will cause the battery to deteriorate more quickly, leading to more frequent battery replacement and making it more "costly" than the fuel it saves.

In principle, Start/Stop increases the number of engine starts during a trip, meaning the battery must deliver high current many more times than in a vehicle without this feature. To meet that demand, manufacturers do not use conventional lead-acid batteries but instead fit specialized types such as EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat). These battery lines are designed for frequent charge-discharge cycles, can handle high starting currents and recover quickly after each engine start.

The difference between a conventional battery and one designed for Start/Stop lies in its structure and load capacity. A regular battery is designed for vehicles that start only a few times during each trip, with limited tolerance for deep discharge and continuous current delivery. If the engine is repeatedly shut off and restarted, the plates and lead material inside deteriorate quickly, causing capacity to drop sharply after a short time.

By contrast, EFB and AGM batteries used for Start/Stop have improved designs and materials that increase their ability to withstand frequent charge-discharge cycles and better meet the demands of repeated starting than conventional batteries. In addition to cranking the engine, these batteries are also designed to supply enough power for auxiliary equipment such as air conditioning, the infotainment system, the ECU, cameras and other electrical devices while the engine is off.

In addition to specialized batteries, vehicles with Start/Stop are also equipped with an energy management system. The control unit continuously monitors voltage, the battery's remaining capacity, ambient temperature and the vehicle's electrical load. When the power supply is not sufficient to safely support the next start, the system will automatically disable Start/Stop. This mechanism helps prevent deep battery discharge that could affect durability, and ensures the vehicle always has enough power to start at any time.

As for the cost savings from using Start/Stop, assume a B- or C-segment gasoline vehicle driven mainly in the city, with fuel consumption of about 8 liters/100 km. Over 10,000 km a year, the vehicle uses about 800 liters of gasoline. Start/Stop is estimated to save 5-10%, equivalent to 40-80 liters of fuel per year, or about VND 1-2 million at current gasoline prices. Meanwhile, an EFB or AGM battery for Start/Stop typically costs VND 3-4 million and lasts 2-4 years, equivalent to an average annual cost of VND 1-1.5 million. In other words, the fuel savings from Start/Stop are basically comparable to or greater than the battery's annual depreciation cost.

Problems arise only when users replace the battery with the wrong type. If a conventional battery is installed in a vehicle with Start/Stop, its service life may drop quickly because that battery type is not designed for frequent high-intensity charge-discharge operation. In that case, the vehicle may be more likely to show weak starting, the Start/Stop system may be disabled frequently, or warning messages may appear on the instrument cluster.

For motorcycles, scooters with Idling Stop are equipped with batteries that have higher capacity and discharge capability, along with a suitable charger and control unit. When the battery is weak, the system will not allow automatic engine shutoff in order to avoid a situation where it cannot be restarted.

In short, the Start/Stop feature does not reduce battery life if the vehicle uses the correct battery type and the original electrical system as designed by the manufacturer. On the contrary, using the wrong battery type or failing to carry out regular maintenance is the main reason battery life declines and creates the impression that Start/Stop harms the battery.
