BYD Exports Thai-Made EVs to Europe to Avoid EU Tariffs
BYD has for the first time exported vehicles made in Thailand to the European market. Exporting from Thailand allows BYD to avoid the anti-subsidy tariffs that the European Union has imposed on electric vehicles produced in China.
Strategic plant in Thailand
BYD inaugurated its CKD assembly plant in Rayong in July 2024. It is the company’s first car production facility outside China that is 100% owned by BYD. The plant has an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, serving both the Thai domestic market and export markets.
The CKD model allows the company to export vehicles in the form of knocked-down parts for assembly in the destination country, helping reduce import taxes and promote local manufacturing. After one year of operation, this past July the plant reached the milestone of 90,000 vehicles delivered to customers.
Exporting from Thailand helps BYD avoid the anti-subsidy tariffs that the European Union has imposed on electric vehicles made in China. At present, Chinese vehicles imported into the EU are subject to an additional 20.7% tariff for BYD (on top of the 10% customs duty), as the company is cooperating with the EU investigation.
Global sales continue to rise, but growth is slowing
In the first seven months of 2025 (from January to July), BYD sold 545,003 electric vehicles in overseas markets, up 133.5% from the same period last year. In total, the company recorded global passenger vehicle sales of 2,458,914 units, up 26.2% year-on-year.
However, growth momentum is showing signs of slowing. In July alone, BYD sold just 341,030 passenger vehicles, nearly flat compared with the same month last year (up 0.1%), marking its slowest growth rate in 18 months.
