Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 leans into fold-and-open technology
The three-pointed star at the rear automatically flips up to reveal the backup camera, and the seat belt automatically extends when someone sits down. Mercedes CLE 53 AMG is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, supported by a 48 V hybrid system. This powertrain produces 443 horsepower, with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard. AMG has also retuned the CLE’s adaptive suspension, delivering a more performance-focused setup with Sport and Sport+ driving modes.
In testing by Car and Driver, the CLE 53 coupe accelerated from 0-97 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, and the convertible may be slightly slower.
The CLE 53’s interior follows the layout of the CLE lineup, with two spacious front seats and a smaller rear row. The AMG version adds a sportier look with carbon-fiber trim, a flat-bottom steering wheel and red stitching.
To reduce wind buffeting in the convertible, an electrically operated wind deflector can be raised behind the rear headrests; a pair of neck warmers integrated into the front seats are there for use when outside temperatures drop but someone still wants to drive with the top down.

The 11.9-inch infotainment screen extends from the center console up to the trio of dashboard air vents, putting Mercedes’ latest MBUX software front and center. A separate 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel displays the CLE53’s digital gauges.
The CLE 53 comes standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and driver attention monitoring. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring are optional.
The two-door model also has several interesting features that can be operated with the push of a button, or fully automatically. The rear emblem can flip up to reveal the integrated backup camera, a clever design that helps keep the lens free of dirt and activates automatically when the driver shifts into reverse. The emblem also serves as the electronic trunk-release handle, allowing the trunk to be opened by pressing on the badge. This feature is common on many modern Mercedes coupe and sedan models, helping conceal the camera and allowing hands-free trunk access.
The automatic seat-belt system works like a mechanical arm that extends the seat belt toward the driver when the driver sits down, making it easier to reach in a two-door car. The system also integrates Pre-Safe technology that automatically tightens the seat belt when a collision is imminent.
In the U.S., the 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLE starts at USD 77,450 and goes up to USD 87,800 depending on version and options. Available trims include Exclusive, Pinnacle and Manufaktur Edition. The top Pinnacle version adds a head-up display, augmented-reality navigation, upgraded headlights and access to more third-party apps through the MBUX infotainment system.
